MICHAEL KING, Founder and Music Director

Mr. King founded the Southwest Children’s Chorus in 1999, and since that time has seen the impact the chorus has made in the lives of its members and audiences alike. Currently, he is the Director of Music Ministries at Grace Presbyterian Church in Plano, Texas where he directs the Chancel Choir, Grace Notes Bell Choir, and the 80-voice Exultation Youth Choir and oversees an active music and worship arts ministry. Previously he served as Director of Music at First United Methodist Church of DeSoto and First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, Texas and has taught all levels of music to grades 1 through 12 as a member of the music faculty of the St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas. Mr. King has led numerous teacher workshops, choir retreats, in-services and honor choirs, and groups under his direction have performed in over 40 states and 9 countries, including Carnegie Hall and the White House. Michael has frequently served as freelance musical director and/or pianist for local musical theatre organizations such as the Dallas Summer Musicals, Dallas Repertory Theatre, Dallas Theatre Center, and other theatre organizations both in DFW and beyond. Some of the shows he has played include Wicked, Miss Saigon, and Cabaret, among others. A native of Irving, TX, he received a degrees from the University of North Texas and Westminster Choir College. His teachers included former Dallas Symphony Orchestra conductor Anshel Brusilow, Metropolitan Opera vocal coach Grant Williams, and concert organist Dale Peters. Mr. King is Past President of the Irving Music Teachers Association, past Vice President for Student Affairs and Board Member of the Texas Music Teachers Association, and former National Competitions Coordinator for the Music Teachers National Association.

SHEREE BAYLESS, Accompanist and Assistant Director

Mrs. Bayless’ began in 2006 as the Accompanist and Assistant Director, serving as pianist and assistant in many ways. She has accompanied the choir on tours throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Sheree is the music teacher at Moates Elementary in DeSoto and is the Church Organist at First United Methodist Church of DeSoto. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Methodist University and her masters from Dallas Baptist University. She and her husband Roy reside in DeSoto.

JULIE HARGROVE, Chorus Manager

Julie Hargrove has served as Chorus Manager since 2009. Julie was a SWCC parent for 6 years and has traveled the world with us as a chaperone on two European tours as well as throughout the United States and Canada. She served as Auction Chair for several years and has been an avid supporter of the choir. A career educator and administrator, Mrs. Hargrove is the Principal of Smith Elementary School in the Duncanville ISD. She brings a wealth of experience to our group with her background as an educator, administrator, and Chorus parent! Julie lives in Midlothian with her husband Jeff and twin daughters Hannah and Rachel, both SWCC alumni.


The business affairs of the Southwest Chorus are managed by its Board of Directors, which is comprised of individuals from a cross-section of the Southwest Dallas and Ellis County communities. The Board meets quarterly and oversees financial and legal aspects of the Chorus, while the Director remains responsible for all artistic and management decisions.
